La Bandiera - News

La Bandiera is among the Great Taste winners of 2017

Great Taste, the world’s most coveted food awards, which celebrates the very best in food and drink, has announced the Great Taste stars of 2017. Out of over 12,300 products to be judged, La Bandiera Olive Oil has won a gold award.  The judges were unanimous in their decision describing the olive oil as smooth, spicy, well balanced and complex with a clean, fresh and fruity aroma.

Judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers, as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. As well as a badge of honour, the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blind-tasting by hundreds of judges.

La Bandiera first entered the Great Taste Awards in 2012 and has been a consistent winner over the years.  As a small producer, this recognition has increased the awareness of our olive oil throughout the UK in what is a very competitive industry.  La Bandiera olive oil can now be found in the UK, Europe and North America in some of the finest restaurants as well as delis.

There were 12,366 Great Taste entries this year and of those products, 165 have been awarded a 3-star, 1,011 received a 2-star and 3,171 were awarded a 1-star accolade. The panel of judges included; chef, food writer and author, Gill Meller, MasterChef judge and restaurant critic, Charles Campion, author and chef, Zoe Adjonyoh, baker, Tom Herbert, and food writer and baking columnist Martha Collison as well as food buyers from Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges, and Harvey Nichols.

UK & New York

Since the launch of La Bandiera olive oil in 2010, we have exhibited at a variety of fine food fairs in the United Kingdom. This exposure has given us a wonderful opportunity to make many new friends and contacts, not to mention the invaluable feedback we have received from consumers about our olive oil. Fortunately the feedback was overwhelmingly positive and very encouraging to a fledgling business such as ours.

La Bandiera olive oil won a gold again in the Great Taste Awards.  This is the third time we have won an award and we were absolutely delighted with this award as the logo helps to differentiate our product from the many olive oils on the market.  The awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, are the largest and most prestigious food awards held internationally.  They are regarded as the “Oscars” of the fine food industry and the logo is the sign that you can trust when making your purchasing decisions.

In 2013 we entered La Bandiera in the New York International Olive Oil Competition  A total of 653 olive oils from 22 countries were entered in the event and ranked in a blind tasting by a panel of judges.  There were 15 judges from 10 countries – most of the judges were academics or experts in the industry.  We won a gold award!  This year we were invited to enter again and achieved an even higher status.  Out of 800 olive oils, only 17 were entered into the “Best in Class” category one of which was La Bandiera Olive Oil.  Needless to say, we are feeling pretty proud of ourselves!

It's Harvest time!

This is one of the best times of the year at La Bandiera as the olive groves come alive with activity.  From early October, the olives will be gently picked and collected in the crates ready to be transported to the crusher where the olives will be cleaned, have the stones removed and get put through the grinder to separate the “meat” of the olive from the oil.  Finally, after that production, the glorious green extra virgin olive oil will emerge. The oil will be stored for a few weeks in order for it to settle and then will be tested by the IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta) to ensure that the oil is of a very high-quality with low acidity and that the origin of the olives is 100% Tuscan.  The IGP will also check our production and  storage facilities.  Once they are satisfied that we are following all the rules, we will receive our endorsement which adds great value to our olive oil.

Make sure you only buy olive oil which has the IGP endorsement otherwise you really do not know how it is produced or even if the olives originated in Italy.  If this subject is of interest to you, I can recommend a wonderful book called “Extra Virginity” by Tom Mueller which delves down deep into the murky world of olive oil production throughout the Mediterranean countries.  Once you read this book, I can guarantee that you will most definitely only buy IGP endorsed olive oil!
